MEĐUNARODNI SVJEDOCI
ACTIVE CAMPAIGN OF TERROR
12. JULI 1995.
UN BASE POTOCARI
An active campaign of terror was carried out in Potocari, which, coupled with the severe physical conditions, so intensified the panic of the civilian population that they were frantic to escape. Refugees from the base could see VRS soldiers torching houses and haystacks.
International witnesses saw incidents which led them to conclude that executions were taking place. One described seeing a man beaten with rifle-butts, then dragged into a house. He then heard a gunshot and concluded the man had been killed.
Other witnesses described shooting and screaming, especially from a cornfield not far from a house where detainees were being held.
Three international observers found 9 or 10 dead bodies near a creek. All of the bodies had civilian clothes.
Another observer witnessed 10 men being led off to a spot where they were later found dead.
One of the Dutch battalion soldiers, during his brief stay in Zagreb upon return from Bosnian Serb-held territory, was quoted as telling a member of the press that "hunting season [is] in full swing... it is not only men supposedly belonging to the Bosnian Government who are targeted...women, including pregnant ones, children and old people aren't spared. Some are shot and wounded, others have had their ears cut off and some women have been raped."
